Technical specifications

The “Königsbau” is the part of the residence bordering directly on Max-Joseph-Platz (square). It was built for King Ludwig I by Leo von Klenze from 1826 to 1835 in the style of Florentine renaissance palaces.

Like the whole of the rest of the Residence, this building is a listed building and is mainly used as a museum. In the course of the rehabilitation of the HVACR system, the Department “Bauen im Bestand” (construction in existing buildings) had to break down a large number of walls and carry out static strengthening as well as reinforced concrete, masonry and plaster work.

In addition to the construction of reinforced concrete ducts in the basement floor, an emergency staircase is being built in the Eastern part of the building which serves to connect floors 5 and 6. The works are rendered especially difficult by the severe lack of space and the adjacent pedestrian zone. Furthermore, the distances over which materials have to be transported within the building are up to 165 m long and cover nine floors.

The earth works on the basement floor of the Residence are additionally supervised by a team of archaeologists.
